Urban Residential Project

Garage Rooftop

The Toronto homeowners wanted to make the best out of their limited outdoor space. The detached garage occupied about 50% of the backyard area, which consisted of a wooden deck and paved patio — with no green space.

This intensive green roof was designed by Cecconi Simone in consultation with ZinCo Canada. The 50 m² (538 square feet) green roof features a reflective pond with an orange tile liner and low maintenance boxwood hedges, ornamental grasses and perennials. The garden was also designed to enhance the view from the 3rd storey balcony of the home. At night, its custom lighting accentuates its diverse features, and provides a visual spectacle for anyone sitting at the patio or inside the home.

Green Roof Assembly

This green roof uses the Floradrain® FD 40-E system over a waterproof, root-resistant substrate.

Key Challenges

One of the biggest challenges came during the construction phase, as access through the alleyway was very tight, and the property itself was narrow.
